When it comes to integrative medicine in Washington DC, there’s no shortage of myths.

Integrative medicine is a new concept for many people. And like with any topic that many people don’t understand or aren’t familiar with, multiple myths and misconceptions have come up surrounding integrative medicine. At Advanced Integrative Rehabilitation and Pain Center, we’ve seen first-hand what a difference integrative medicine can make, and that’s why we’ve set out to debunk some of the biggest myths surrounding it.

Myth #1. Integrative medicine isn’t compatible with modern medicine.

The truth is that traditional, modern medicine is a big part of integrative medicine. Integrative medicine is what you get when you combine proven alternative therapies, like medical acupuncture and chiropractic care, with modern medicine. In integrative medicine, alternative therapies are used to complement traditional therapies.

Myth #2. You have to choose either alternative or traditional medicine.

As we talked about in our last point, integrative medicine is all about combining effective strategies from both traditional and alternative medicine. With integrative medicine, you don’t have to choose between alternative and traditional medicine; you can have the best of both worlds.

Myth #3. Alternative therapies are not based on science.

When you turn to an integrative medicine doctor, like Dr. Sniezek from Advanced Integrative Rehabilitation and Pain Center, you’ll never be exposed to any therapies that haven’t been scientifically proven. We won’t ask you to meditate on a crystal or feed you crocodile dung. What we will do is help you determine which proven alternative therapies, like chiropractic care or medical acupuncture, can help you find relief.

Myth #4. Integrative medicine is only for tree huggers and hippies.

People tend to think of patients who seek integrative medicine as hippies or tree huggers, but the reality is that people from all walks of life have pursued and benefited from integrative medicine. However, this doesn’t mean that integrative medicine is the right or only approach to every health concern. Before making a decision about what’s best for you, talk to your doctor!

Myth #5. Natural therapies are always safe.

Many people believe that everything natural is also safe, but the truth is that the word “natural” is not synonymous with the word “safe.” People also tend to believe that things that are natural are more effective or better than things that are not natural, but this is also untrue. With any therapy, whether it be a natural, alternative therapy or a traditional, modern therapy, you should do your research and talk to your doctor. When it comes to your health, it’s always smart to play it safe.
